i agree i have bent rules sometimes but i try to stick to the basics as much as possible(cant go wrong with the basics)

Rules....ha. I make my own as I go. Well not entirely true but I am not nearly as anal as some people. I over stock and over filter so I guess they offset.

there have been times I have skipped weekly WC for more important reasons ( wife in hospital meant more than the stupid comm. tank). and I wish I could afford to filter all my tanks more

My pleco remains a broken rule :S
I'm considering getting one last cichlid for my 55, which would be overstocking it a little, I think.

My golden rule: If you want to break a rule, do it right and keep risk to a minimum.

I always follow the basic rules like proper maintenance, water changes, not buying fish that will outgrow the tank etc but i dont follow ALL the rules because i have and still do keep fish together that most people discourage keeping together. I dont believe thare are set rules with what you can and cant keep together (within resaon obviously) you dont put a orge cat with smaller fish or a stingray with puffers or very terratorial cichlids etc.
i dont think anyone who has kept fish for any ammount of time can honistly answer yes to this poll, we have all broken the rules at some stage.

ive always just winged it and fixed problems as the come. kinda self taught in that fashion of trial and error. that's why I like cichlids, theyre hardy, the only thing thats ever killed any of my cichlids is my cichlids. and they thrive on periods of neglect i sometimes put them through

Rules are meant to be broken, right? I take them as guidelines that allows for much room for mistakes in overstocking or under filtering.

Main rule I have broken is the mixing old world with new world cichlids, as there are too many generalizations made when it comes to mixing them and its pros and cons.

yep. my tanks is stupidly overstocked (although good filtration!)

i have a FH in with a BGK and also some corys and a ram lol...who woulda thought they would live???!!!

when i FIRST started i had a 2ft clown knife in a 4ft tank

the rules were horrendously broken when i first started keeping.

oh and i dont treat my water and i never use medications or the stuff the store recommend to get ur water right. i do regular water changes and never test water.

whenever i test my water and treat it something will then die and things go wrong, since i havnt everythings been in perfect health.
