Does Insence affect fish?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
This is the part where I should be posting loads of interesting links on this subject, but I don't know how, lol. But here goes....

I was always curious about cigarette smoke but in my research I also came across material on scented candles, incense burners and aerosol cleansing/air freshener products.

There is a lot of readily available information on all of this. All you need to do is type in "toxic effects of".....and whatever it is you're interested in, ie cigarette smoke, scented candles, aerosol products etc etc..."on an aquarium."

It is certainly not a case of "oh yeah, they're all harmless". Take from all the information what you will. I guarantee you will think twice before using some "products" in the vicinity of your tanks.

No research or study required, as far as I am concerned. I don't want to breathe that stuff, and won't subject my fish...or dog, turtle, etc...to it either.

Won't let my pets smoke or chew tobacco either.

I am not into incense and never have been, even in the 60s when I had long hair and wore beads and bell-bottoms. However, I was a lifelong smoker when I started keeping fish. I should say I was heavy smoker by then and that I quit almost 12+ years ago. I will confess I might have been smoking other things too,

Early on I noticed an oily substance on the surface of my tanks. I decided this was smoke residue and I got an expensive air cleaner for my room (it was an Ionic Breeze). It gummed up nicely and required serious cleaning about every couple of weeks. However, the film on the water surface of my tanks went away not long after I began using the air cleaner.

After I gave up tobacco I have not had any issues and I still smoke other things at times. So I know that smoke was not the issue. It was tobacco.

Your air pump is not an air generator. It is pumping whatever you have for room air into the tank. Incense room perfume etc.

If you can smell it- the air pump is pumping it into your tank
