Does lighting affect coloration?

I know some puffers can change their colors or markings slightly to match their surroundings...

But unfortunately i personally dont know enough about oscars to say if sand alone could cause such discoloration... Normally darker substrate means darker pattern / color...

Hard to tell. My Freddy goes jet black over a dark substrate.

Never kept an oscar though....
