JView attachment 1010348View attachment 1010348View attachment 1010348ust bought him/her today. Only been in the tank for 3 hours. He/she is about 3-3 1/2". Paid $60 for it so better be a nice looking RT. I've never spent over $15 for a fish and I've had my heart set on a RT for a long time so I'm pretty excited about the red/dark orange to start showing. What's the best food I can feed him/her (sorry, haven't named it yet. Still thinking) for the best color outcome? The guy at LFS told me what they feed but y'all are my go to peeps so I decided to ask y'all first. ;)

Looks scared with the fins pulled in. Any tank mates? Maybe the water parameters were very different. I don't think she's ill. Good luck. I'm sure she'll come around soon. Give her high quality pellet food of a diameter that she can eat. No live food.

No other tank mate except the ghost shrimp I have divided off to the for my husbands fish. uploadfromtaptalk1399472076211.jpg

What is the best color enhancing pellet I can get? I know they need spirulina infused food. Are they ever able to eat live food if I feed the feeders high quality color enhancers? At what age/size are the RT mature enough to know exactly what sex?

The profile, and dark color in in the dorsal suggest your festae is female.
Any spirulina, vitamin enriched food will help color, also enough water changes that keep nitrate under 10ppm.
Here are a couple of my female festae.

Males are quite different with a much steeper profile and lack of dark pigment in the dorsal, like the one below.

I drip acclimated as I do with any fish I get. What about a few ghost shrimp every now and then? I don't like feeding minnows or goldfish just because I'm always afraid it may have parasites or some other disease. Usually we feed the ghost shrimp veggies or pellets with good nutrition that the fish don't really care for then feed the ghost shrimp to the fish. I definitely don't want to harm her in any way. Live food gets pricy anyway.

I've had bad results with ghost shrimp. A batch almost killed my nine year old 14" Red Dragon Flowerhorn about a year ago. They carry parasites and the shells can become impacted, also. The very best idea is to avoid all live food. Here in South Florida, we have a HUGE population of Red Terrors (Mayans) in our waterways and they get large and brightly colored. They seem to eat anything. I'm sure you'll find many foods that yours will love.
