Does my stand look "beefy" enough?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have a stand made for a 75 gallon, the legs are made from 2x2s. I'm sure 2x4s will hold up a 29 gallon.

That should hold a 29 gallon with no problem. Of course, adding another 2x4 certainly wouldn't hurt it either. Like Mach_Six said, just look at what's in any lfs. Thinner crapboard with no internal support! You'll be good to go as long as its balanced well (nice and level).

imo it looks great for a 29... however i would get a shelving bracket (big metal "L") and screw it to the wall (stud) to keep it from tipping over aka kidproof/kittyproof/drunkproof

Hah,will do.

put a shelf and front door on it then paint it and it'll be awsome

consider a particle board stand that when wet falls apart for the most part.... and here you have solid 2x4.... if anything wrap it in plywood will strengthen it and make it look nicer

What would i need to add to make a 55 gallon stand similar to this?id imagin doubling up the legs (4x4) I plan on making the 55 stand 6 inches shorter though.
Ill post pics when i skin it.

2x4 are fine... 3/4 ply on the top and just add some cross pieces across the top and bottom to give it more of a frame.. and block the corners to keep it from falling over if you bump it..
my 55 has 2x2 on the corners.. a 1x2 in the middle on the back... 1x2 around the top and 3/4 plank (real board not play) on the top front and sides... theres also 30" or so of door on the front... the whole thing is held together with bradnails and glue... theres thousands of stands just like this one floating around... ill beef it up when i move it in a month or 3 to make room for a 120 but thats just for piece of mind im sure it will be fine

cant wait to see it done post more pics when doing it haha

the most important part of a stand other than not falling over is to be level... water is like 8.5lb a gallon or something so a 55g tanks usuially has somewhere around 50 gallons of water in it.... thats like 470lbs of water + gravel + decorations... 550/600lbs on a 1/4-3/8 piece of glass... so level is important...
