Does NLS really live up to its hype?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i prefere hikari bio gold, it stays floating and is much more easily removed so doesnt murk up the tank with un eaten food in all the crevices... garlic makes the water stink too... just my opinion, i feed both atm as after using only hikari as my pellet i bought the nls. prob the best grade pellet but not the most practical.

NLS is awesome food. My only gripe is that, compared to Hikari, the pellets are as hard as a diamond. This makes the pellets not as enticing to a lot of my fish that are raised on the softer and more palatable Hikari stuff. But, I still have a fair amount of NLS pellets and flake in the rotation.

I guess it depends on what your feeding.
I always thought NLS was going to be great food for my rays but I had to switch to massivore pellets.
NLS made the water smell bad and it made the water look dirty.
Flake food might be different thou..

If you're looking for an overnight miracle, you'll be disappointed.

That said, NLS is among the highest quality foods available for cichlids and a solid choice for long term health. I've used it for a long time and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

If you're looking for short terms results, up your water change schedule and skip feeding a day or two per week.

+1

I've been feeding NLS to various fish for over a decade with excellent results.

It's a good brand but nothing amazing. I find Hikari brand amazing because all my fish seem to accept the pellets without a fuss. I switched to independent brand for 7 months now and the fish don't seem to mind. The fish colors are just as nice.

Like most of the others have said...Quality food...not a "magic bullet"...I find that it does leave a film on the surface of my tank that I do not get from the other foods I feed. Put it in rotation with other good quality feed and it will serve you well.

I feed the 10mm to my cichla, most of them don't like it but will eat it. I have a few that would rather starve. I moved them to NLS for cost about a year ago from Massivore. I've noticed their colors are less vibrant and they've lost bulk, my pocketbook is bigger but my fish are less happy IME. My arow and catfish like it, but they would eat a turd if I put it in there.

Another positive is my water doesn't smell like but anymore from Massivore
