kill it in an hour though?

when my dad would feed his moray eels with goldfish

he would put the feeders in a bowl with tap water

they would usually die within the hour, ok maybe some exageration, but hour"s"

and this was back in the day when this lfs we got them at was all about quality

these feeders where the biggest and healthiest you could possibly get.

tap water still killed them in hours

... will the chemicals in untreated tap water be strong enogh to kill my good bacteria?

Well, I went to Mexico this one time...and...:nilly:

thanks for the reply guys i did not add any fish i just ran out of dechlorinater the other day and started thinking about little things like bacteria . the tank has been running 48 hrs now i guess their is no chlorine left but i will add some dechlorinater any way and get a fresh dirty filter cartridge in their and get that bacteria going.

that should have killed your oscar within the hour.

sounds like something else

I had a friend that never used anything to treat water for a year and his 2 oscars lived with out porblems.. It was city water. not well water.. No hith, the fish today still don't have hith.

Toxicity of tap water varies with pH and the chemicals used. Yes, it can kill fish easily and relatively quickly.

High pH and chloramine will suffocate fish, no question.

If the water contains only chlorine (no chloramine), it may off-gas fast enough to prevent a major problem.

A partial water change may also dilute the chlorine levels far enough to make it safe. For example, slow drip systems are often used without dechlorinators.

And keep in mind that many water departments add additional chlorine after a big storm to make sure no nasties somehow seep into our drinking water. So the level of toxicty can change.

Just my 2 cents...
