does the law stop you from buying fish?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yeah, if it was legal to rob a bank then i would have all the fish in the world.

And one law i dont get about RBPs here..

You cant sell them, you cant buy them.

BUT...you can have them in your house?

Just want to say...before the flaming I am about to receive for my previous post...that I know lots of people have illegals. It's just that if you have the time to research exactly WHY they are illegal you can better understand. Laws are based off the professionals that research and track wild fish populations. It's not like they sit around and say...let's make this fish illegal. There is a reason for it...whole ecosystems can be wiped out for a measily several hundred bucks. Then people pay the big bucks for them when they reach the illegal black market. Not worth it IMO.

other reasons as well as extinction/endangerment of the illegal fish/habitat

"When" illegal fish are released into local waters they can and do wipe out the local fish populations as well, by choking the locals out, throwing off the balance in an area, eating the locals/locals food supply.

A mature/educated fish keeper will understand and respect the laws that are intended to provide the best experience possible....

What about if it was against the law to talk?? Stupid laws should be broken and making fish illegal is stupid. Punishing everyone for the mistakes of a few is not how the law should be. The idiots dumping fish back into the wild should get 30 years jail or something rather then making them illegal.

If it were illegal to talk, then some smart person would figure out a way to follow the system to get that law repealed, you are being silly.

And as far as punishing everyone for the sins of the few, those people out there willing to break the law, will only cause stricter laws...

Work to change laws, or obey them...

Who wants to have to get a permit just to keep a guppy ????

Lil_Stinker...   You are too funny! Thoughtful replies!

I know that many nice fish are sold in the pet industry that are legal, if they are illegal to own there has to be a reason for it....so I researched a little to find out WHY they are illegal.

My 2 cents: Purchasing illegals of any species only promotes the further imminant extinction of the fish in question. Many, many fish die before reaching a potential buyer and they are harvested in crazy, destructive ways with no regard to the beauty of life. Unfortunately "illegal" is normally associated with "risk" and further associated with "more money" and "reason for the harvester to kill and destruct" to wit: all of the above constributes to the eradication of a species sought after to get a :headbang2 or a  when in all actuallity the only thing I see is a greedy :naughty: sheepish grin. It can be determined that if anyone gets off on owning or distributing illegal fish that are endangered than really that person is a moron and needs to get a life.
Furthermore, I would hope...no expect...that F&W would patrol forums. Seems logical to me.

Just want to say: Never post on MFK when Crown and Coca Cola has you in it's grasp  . I see I went a little strong on this hope no one is offended not intended to be that way....I officially withdraw my "moron that needs to get a life" statement: we all have a skeleton or 2 in our closets.

Guess this setup may have some merit:

alot of the fish ilegal in our state are not ilegal because they are endangered they are ilegal because they have the potential to become invasive or are considered harmful to humans.

RANT:

even though i highly doubt a motoro stingray could become invasive futhermore who would release a 100+ dollar fish?
and i realize that there are stupid people out there who would but the chances of the animal surviving in our climate/water are extremley slim.

Oddball...you are the man!

Here is what most F&W are after...people and distributors like this:

In the fall of 1997, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service agents began investigating the trafficking in Asian bonytongues. During the investigation, agents found 59 of the fish hidden inside 3 of 15 cartons that were shipped to Port Elizabeth, New Jersey, on October 8, 1997. The shipment was supposed to have contained 472 goldfish and 72 red-tail gouramies from a fish farm in Malaysia and was addressed to 38 Aquarium, the Chinatown shop where Chen is the president and principal owner. Each of the Asian bonytongues was individually packed inside plastic bags, while most of the goldfish and gouramies were either dead or in poor condition.
Undercover agents then visited 38 Aquarium in November 1997, whereupon they met Chen. They asked him if they could purchase Asian bonytongues and were given a price of $1,000 to $6,000 each. On April 2, 1998, they returned to the aquarium shop and were taken by Chen to a garment factory on 63rd Street in Brooklyn. There they found numerous fish tanks and pools containing approximately a dozen Asian bonytongues. The agents paid a total of $2,500 for two of the fish. The fish were later examined and confirmed to be the endangered bonytongues.
Chen was arrested on April 15, and charged with one count of trafficking in an endangered species. He was released on $100,000 bond in Federal District Court in Manhattan, and if convicted, could receive up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.

Poor goldfish...:(
