Does this filtration sound about right?

Dude you got a 640g do it right make youself a good sump If you don't have the cash or cant find a used tank look up rubbermaid stock tanks. Sumps are very simple to build and there are some great threads on this site. For the money you would spend on to big canister filters, you can build a sump for less and the canisters you will end up ditching in the long run. Is the 640 drilled or does it have a built in overflow box?

It has a big overflow box and it is also drilled on the underside in the overflow box whitch i am thinking i can add a filter on top and some bio balls in the overflow for added media.
 
The extra media sounds good but just keep in mind there is no prefilter so those bioball are gonna get grimed up because the tank water is going to hit that first instead of running thru a filter pad. The tank is drilled with overflow so thats good that will make for easy plumbing

Yeah, the added media isnt set in stone yet. i'll only put it in there if i can put a filter on top of it.
 
If you could drill one of your 55's you could set one in back of the other, on blocks so it was about 6" or so above the low one. Then when the upper 55 filled up it would drain down into the lower one where you'd have your pump.

You could do that too but your stand is gonna be real tall unless you set it up next to the tank

the tank itself is 4ft tall so i was planning on putting the sump next to it under my 100gal tank.that way i can put the 640 1ft off the ground for easyer cleaning.
 
Eh yea then that might not work so well. Easier cleaning, good luck with that chore...my tank is 30" deep and even at that height it's a giant pain in the rear to do some of the cleaning/decorating.

Its only a matter of time before one sump is overly full and the other empty.

The two sumps need to be joined as one...

when talking about filteration- the only time less would be better, is when bad advice is given out
