Well I have a Fluval 405 as one of my filter on my 120 gallon tank. I have this problem when I change my filter media and clean my filter after I clean and everything....when the water starts flowing all this crap comes out from the output hose. The stuff must be from the filter or from the hoses. It gets all over the water and flats arounds for days.

How can I avoid this ?

Does this happen to anyone else?

I haven't done it yet, but I'm thinking about replacing the standard ribbed/corrugated hoses with smooth hoses, It should prevent most of the buildup.

I avoid this by sticking a filter sock over the return line for about 45 minutes after doing water changes and filter cleanings of all my canisters.

Happens with my two FX5s and 405. It does suck.

I avoid this by sticking a filter sock over the return line for about 45 minutes after doing water changes and filter cleanings of all my canisters.

That is a great idea! I can't believe I never thought of that. I will implement that plan in next month's cleaning.

Nope happens with my Eheim hoses.

I know, it happens with all canister hoses, but it seems to be much worse with the fluval hoses. With the smooth hoses, you can tie a piece of a rag to a long wire and pull it through to clean the hose. This method doesn't work too well on fluvals.

Yeah it happens to me. I use 15 gallons of tank water to clean out my media. Then I start up the filter and afterwards finish up another 30 gallons of water. I can usually siphon out most of that crap
