I've got a 125g thats got no center braces at all and got a 75g that also got no center brace. Both old school tanks, that are solid!

3/8 is pretty good for a 90. I wouldn't worry there. As far as getting ripped off, if you're happy with the tank you didn't get ripped off. Remember, a decent wooden stand for a 90 is about $220 new so you did fine. That being said, I look for about a dollar a gallon for the tank and then more for any extras.
