keep a tank from cycling? just wondering because it says it removes ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, chlorine, and chloramine. i use it everytime i do a water change and it just occured to me that maybe it's starving whatever bacteria if i have any. am i supposed to switch to a water conditioner that only deals with chlorine/chloramine? thoughts appreciated.

it doesnt actually remove it per-say it just converts them to nontoxic forms like prime and a few others out there and the bb in the filters can still convert them...

Yeah what he said but Fish constantly produce ammonia so there isn't really a shortage lol.

As said before, it doesn't remove it, it detoxifies it.

old thread but same idea.
i did a 100% water change and cleaned out my sand because my tank kept on going cloudy. then i added amquel plus along with my established filter but took it out because i had to add melafix. i assumed everything was going to be okay since amquel would detoxify everything. i never do water checks because i always use amquel.
today i checked my water and the ammonia was at 2-3 ppm. so i added more amquel but same ammonia readings. im guessing that ammonia is still traceable because amquel only detoxifies it but i can see all my fish have rapid gill pumping. theyre not active and my arowana is swimming at a slope. help.

I would give it 24 hours and re test.

No mater WHAT your maintaince schedule is ... or how frequent your water changes there is NO excuse for not doing regular testing. I've heard the argument that it's useless to keep getting good readings but knowing exactly when a problem starts can help you determine the root cause and correct it.
