my mini schnauzer has developed the strangest eating disorder. so the story is we recently had to get rid of our cats due to our sons allergy to them. since then we noticed mickey(our dog) started eating less, no big deal we thought, he was just sad and would get over it. he's always been skinny but last week i went to pet him and could feel his spine, so we got him some soft and moist food to see if that helped and he ate some, but not much.

this week he felt extremely skinny and i could feel every bone in his little body. OK, now im worried!

well today i finally figured out how to get him to eat. i have to actually sit on the floor with him and hold his food bowl while he eats, and encourage him the whole time. and he will only eat the soft food, i tried mixing it with his normal food but he will pick through every piece and drop all the hard food on the ground.:screwy:

i find this very strange but atleast he's eating. we are soon getting another dog so that he can have a friend again, guess well see if things get better then.

That is strange. Not that this is the same because nutrition isn't involved but my blue heeler won't play with her toys or calf bones unless I physically hold them for her. Then she'll happily chew or squeak them for hours.

i would take a quick trip to the vet my big boy storm gets like that every once and a while and acouple of days later he pukes up sock or some kind of clothing artical still cant figure out how he gets them

i would definitly get a trip to the vet just to make sure there is no blockage.. is he pooping.... i would hold off on getting the new dog until this problem is resolved since the stress of new companion may make matters worse...Is the new one a puppy or dog? You may have to give some vitamins... too..

That sounds really sad! I agree, a visit to the vet is probably the best bet.

Animals do suffer from some depression from time to time. My family has an English Bulldog and if my parents go away for a period of time he tends to get a bit sulky when he gets home. He'll stop eating and just sit around and mope.

Try some other treats that you love he loves, he might come around. He lost a friend so its probably a lot to do with that. I'm sure the vet can give you some handy tips though.

definitely a quick trip to the vet just for a quick check over. if they find nothing then at least you have peace of mind and can concentrate on getting him eating properly.

My sister's dog was doing the exact same thing. Turns out, she had a pretty bad case of worms and was also nursing a leg injury. Little meds and a childrens aspirin and she is doing quite nicely.

This post hits home. We noticed my 10 year old boxer had lost a little weight but was still eating and playing like normal. When we took her to the vet they found a large mass on her liver. Two weeks later March 4 two days ago we had to put her down. She was no longer eating and not the same dog. Good luck.

I know pets will get depressed when they loose a mate... even my oscar stopped eating when the other oscar that was in the tank died... hope he feels better soon!!!

Vet as others have been saying.

Before you go, check its teeth. My dog stopped eating, and it was because he had chipped a tooth, and it got all infected, so it hurt him too much to eat.
