Vet as others have been saying.

Before you go, check its teeth. My dog stopped eating, and it was because he had chipped a tooth, and it got all infected, so it hurt him too much to eat.
very good point to check ...

my mini schnauzer has developed the strangest eating disorder. so the story is we recently had to get rid of our cats due to our sons allergy to them. since then we noticed mickey(our dog) started eating less, no big deal we thought, he was just sad and would get over it. he's always been skinny but last week i went to pet him and could feel his spine, so we got him some soft and moist food to see if that helped and he ate some, but not much.

this week he felt extremely skinny and i could feel every bone in his little body. OK, now im worried!

well today i finally figured out how to get him to eat. i have to actually sit on the floor with him and hold his food bowl while he eats, and encourage him the whole time. and he will only eat the soft food, i tried mixing it with his normal food but he will pick through every piece and drop all the hard food on the ground.:screwy:

i find this very strange but atleast he's eating. we are soon getting another dog so that he can have a friend again, guess well see if things get better then.

try adding grated cheese on the food
you can also try adding some chicken or beef broth but not advisable because its kinda expensive in the long run

you can also try introducing a new flavor

my dachsund doesnt like chicken but likes lamb or beef so try different flavors

there are also some food spplement available try troy nutripet

i forgot the price but its not that expensive

and by the way i wasnt able to read the other posts because im at work and dont have much time

i think if you get another dog he will be fine. but who am i?
you have a right to your opinion... and your opinion may be right.. i just think he should check out and make sure nothing else is wrong first...then another dog would be a plus... :D

I would have a vet asses the situation ASAP. I would guess this to be a health related issue that could stem from MANY different things.

Maybe try a whole new fiid with a different flavor all together, maybe he's tired of the S.O.S for dinner..:)
As others have stated looks like a trip to the vet is instore for him.. Don't want to sound gross but grab a poop sample to bring with you, the vet will probably ask for one to test..

Take a trip to the vet just to make sure there is nothing wrong. something like this happened to my parents dog and it turned out to be stomach cancer that seemed to just show up over nite.

i would definitly get a trip to the vet just to make sure there is no blockage.. is he pooping.... i would hold off on getting the new dog until this problem is resolved since the stress of new companion may make matters worse...Is the new one a puppy or dog? You may have to give some vitamins... too..

yes he's pooping. last night i fed him way too much food as i was happy to get him to eat, needless to say i found myself wathcing him poop all day long today. he happily eats "treats", like french fries and such. he's acting alot better now that i got him to eat. he's always been a neurotic dog, and i think his nerves got the best of him. whithin a months time we moved and got rid of our cats, so its been a little hectic lately but is calming down. we still have a couple months till we get another dog. we will visit the vet as well.
