Where do some of you people come up with some of these ideals. Dogs have some of the hardiest digestive systems around. Granted dog food will not kill the fish, but really. If money is that much of an issue maybe you should scale back some. You must have over extended yourself in regards to your finances.

^x2.

The fishstore owner is feeding catfood because he's saving money, period. That's the only reason. He doesn't care about the fish's long term health. There's a good probability he even wants it to die in your care so you'll have to come back and buy another one.

3 adolescent cichlids are breaking the bank? i find that difficult to believe.

I don't know what the laws regarding pets are over there.
But over here, forced cannibalism is regarded as taboo
Fish are fish in the same way mammals are mammals, birds are birds, lizards are lizards, etc. I'm a mammal and I eat other mammals all the time. Eating animals of the same class isn't cannibalism.

The stuff they put in dog food isn't going to be good on the water parms, along with others mentioning mammilian diet longterm isn't great idea on the quality of life for your fish. Granted some people do it. I've heard of hotdogs being fed etc etc.

If you want to go really cheap. Go outside, harvest earthworms, and keep cockroach colony going and feed em that. That's the cheapest way you can go, make your own food, there are many keepers out there making their own food out there or raising the live feeds. I use stuff to make it gel up whenever I'm feeling creative but end up throwing it out when I find out that my combination skills suck and the fish agree with me lol. Really its the basics that's the best for your fish. Offer them stuff to nibble on like fresh fruits/veggies/ leftover shrimps/prawns/seafood that your family didn't cook up or whatever. It's another way to save money in the long run. Whatever you do, just dont do the dog/cat food route lol.

They're your fish and enjoy being creative, use fresh fruits/veggies/seafood whatever is leftover/discards that wasn't cooked or used up and see if they like it or not. Some cichlids love nibbling on veggies/fruits along with my plecos/loaches Just gotta think of other ways around. I find it fun to try discarded parts of the veggies and see if they'll like it or not. Unused ears of corn was a huge hit with my loaches. believe it or not lol. Pumpkins was a big hit over halloween with my plecos. It's really not going to hurt anyone if you put some aside and see what they'll do with it or not.

Good luck and enjoy raising those cichlids!

Agreed with the above, next time you're having some fruit or veggies share it with your cichlids. My loaches and Pleco went nuts over watermelon - granted this holds very little nutritional value, it was still a nice treat for them.

good thing he doesnt have my dog as a pet.... he eats a least 55 lbs of eukanuba a month and he's not even 2 years old yet.

Edit: Dogo argentinos are known for growing till 2 or 3 years unlike some other dogs that are done after the first year.
