Anyone have or had a dog on prednisone?

I rescued a pit pup 2 yrs back for a skin condition. Hair grows, and falls out, then doesn't grow for months... looks like a hairless rat- skin in fire engine red sometimes- sometimes super dry and cracking, sometimes open and oozing.

Never itchy.

Changed foods multiple times, went all holistic, had tested for allergies, went to about 6-7 vets, tried DIY ideas...

Was also treated for mange, even though never had it. Have mitoban dips, and oral ivermectin as well as the shots.

Prednisone is pretty much my last option...

I have a Boston terrier that had almost the same problem. I changed his diet to Fish or no grain diet. My experience with skin problems for dogs has always been diet. Predisone is a steroid and will kill the dog eventually even in small doses.

I've been doing the no grain for 2 years, and nothing but fish for a year and no change. He doesn't even drink tap water anymore!

I'm not concerned with the longevity of his life, but more so the quality.

I know prednisone will eventually be his demise.

Had a Maltese Poodle that developed allergies to Fleas, and Grass. Of all things. End result was Prednisone. She lived 21 years and the last 7 years only had hair on the front half of her body. But played and ate well up to the week she passed.

My dog was on it for skin problems and she lived her normal lifespan...died at 18...

It seemed to help. She was not on it constantly her whole life or anything..but she was on it for a considerable time.

Have you tried a thin layer of Bag Balm? I love that stuff...it is greasy though so a very thin layer.

yep tried it. No luck.

very sad to hear but i sure hope it works for him..

I've had my dog (the older of the 2) on and off to fight whatever is ailing her at the moment. I don't like putting her on it, but in the end, it's about quality of life. I'm currently working with some tea tree oil topical treatments/shampoos to try to help her out. Seems to work a bit, but requires 2x a day sprays for her to look comfortable.

I've done tea tree, coconut oil, olive oil, vegetable oil, borax/peroxide, bag balm, kelp, extra vitamins, holisitic tea soaks...

the list goes on...
