Only takes a swat or two, treated a GI whose hand and forearm looked like that, one swat left and one swat right, quick as a blink. Guy thought it was dead and was going to pull a few quills as keepsakes, he got to keep a bunch instead. If it missed the eyes and they get out all the quills the dog should be fine but have an aversion to porkies.
