Don’t go in the tall grass....

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'm a nature geek myself. I live near Metro Park so seeing deer, raccoons, possums is a treat. The rare appearance of fox and coyote. I get excited when I see a praying mantis my favorite insect. Took in a egg sac and about 200 little mantis emerged lol. Released them on plants of the flower bed. In Ohio 500 dollar fine if caught killing a praying mantis.

Reminds me; when hiking on table mountain we woke up on the second day and pretty much every plant in the area was covered in spiderwebs. No spiders to be seen on the few webs we observed though.

Now just what is that in the 4th picture?

I love cicadas! I find them from time to time each year.
My son found this one yesterday. It just hatched, if that’s what you’d call it. It’s wings were very soft still so I had him set it off in the woods.

That is a fantastic find, I’ve only found 2 live cicadas and the fact your son found one that had just shed is amazing.

Is this only for wild mantis? I know some reptile keepers feed mantis to their animals...

I’ll add South Africa to the list of places never to go to right alongside australia....

Yes only the wild praying mantis native to Ohio.

I’d love to see a mantis! Them guys are so cool. It’s amazing you got to hatch some!

I’ll have to look for some of my other cicada pictures. I find two or three live ones a year. I find dead ones and their shed casings more often then seeing live ones. You can hear them all the time. As a kid I told my mom that was the sound of summer. Lol

After years of believing the praying mantis was protected and killing one was a crime now read that is a myth. I personally will still protect a mantis if in harm's way.

I was thinking Wow, when I saw that $500 fine, but Thx for clarifying. I just kicked a praying mantis out of one of my fish rooms yesterday. Had one land on a (screened) tank lid a couple of months ago, which I was alerted to by hearing my Blue Base jumping up and trying to eat it.

I'm more concerned about being surprised by one these types of critters though. I captured this guy a few months ago and let him go in a nearby field. A few days ago my daughter found a long piece of shedded snake skin at the top of these stairs. I think he came back lol.

What specie of snake ?

What specie of snake ?

That's a Golden Tree Snake (I believe the best or one of the best flying snakes in the world). They're quite common here. Only mildly venomous to humans (unless one happened to have an allergic reaction). They like to feed on geckos, small lizards and mice, and are actually quite beautiful. It's the cobras and big pythons you really need to worry about. Lost a beautiful young Yellow Lab to a cobra bite about 9 years ago. Really sad but she died protecting us and took the snake out with her.
