Cool. A black background would make it look a lot better. You don't need anything special; a black posterboard will work.
 
Don't do something else!! You're good real good with what you got right now; in a few months, I guarantee you going to have some excitement with the bichirs. Careful with the angel, they really shouldn't look like that. Monitor how it eats and make sure it's not stressed esp with your tiger barbs; they got a reputation for pulling on fins. Also, I think you will need a bigger tank in half a year.

Look into real plants. Vals, and annubias aren't difficult to take care of.

Your full tank shot looks good; bichirs are real cute.
 
Tank looks real good now CB...Stock does too besides the bichir's but if you really do get a tank for them that will be big enough I think you'll be alright.
