I am baffled why would not remove power from the heater before grabbing it?

Cause it was rusting and I wanted it out ASAP so I wasn't worried cause I thought it didn't work and as I was trying to unplug it it started sparking so I tossed it then it exploded into two

Heater has crack + take it out of water before unplug the power cord + heater start sparkling + toss it on to a bucket lid + heater explode = don't buy Fluval heater!
This should be moved to lesson learned forum

100 bucks says it wasnt unplugged during a water change and thats where the crack came from in the first place

I know I would unplug any damaged heaters before removing them, but I've seen electrical damage first hand. To be fair though there was a massive heater recall a few years ago because they were dramatically failing, but I can't remember which line they were.
