I was at my local walmart recently and went to have a look at the pet department. I have NEVER seen fish being kept in worse conditions
than they are at walmart:(. Every tank had at least one dead fish in it and there were several fish in different tanks that all had Ich and the dumb people that work in that department weren't even treating the sick fish! Most of the people that work in that department know next to nothing about the tropical fish they sell there, and there was one employee that was ''explaining'' how Bettas breed and was telling the people that they lay eggs on the side of the glass and then the female eats the male!!:irked:. And they only feed the fish once a week!:irked:. Walmart selling live fish and then not caring for them properly and hiring employees that know nothing about fish to work in the pet department is inexcusable and should not be tolerated! If we all band together and stop buying fish from walmart or even stop shopping at walmart altogether, and file complaints to our local walmarts that take bad care of fish, they should stop selling them. Thanks, GarGuy.

I would go out on the limb and say the majority of MFK would never ever buy a fish from walmart, so no worries there....lmao

I would of asked him if the kind they sold were half praying mantis, and informed them that the male builds a bubble nest but w.e... Walmart can't keep fish worth the life of them, but at least some of them realize this now, and some look to be shutting down thier fish section. I've had the same exact problems, esp seeing them there with ich, telling them and then them telling me they dont. Then went back to rescue the one oscar the next day, only to find it dead. I am guilty of buying there though (from a different walmart), as my avatar O is from there, b/c after a month I couldnt take seeing him suffer being underfeed in garbage conditions and bought him.

everyone should know by now that walmart bites the big one in the entire pet dept. the across the river from me has skletons of what use to be fish in just about all their tanks thats what the other sick fish feed on.especially the O's and the plecs there the worst of all.

I have purchased healthy fish from Wal-Mart before. I bought 4 silver dollars and 2 pictus cats from them. Good, healthy fish. I took a good long look at them before I bought them (they were on sale). I QT'd them, and after a week, released them into my tanks. No problem from them at all.

Fish are (gasp!) fish. There are no name brand fish. If you know what you are looking at (which I sometimes do), you can buy healthy ones from Wal-Mart. Often for cheaper than you could at the lfs.

when me and my family were on a trip to florida, we stopped at a wal-mart to get some food. when my parents were shopping around, i decided to check out the fish. i noticed that in one of the tanks, the gouramis were being literaly eaten alive by what i think were siamese algae eaters. i told the man that was working in the pet department, and he just shrugged his shoulders and ignored me. i could'nt even express my happiness when i found out that they were not going to sell fish anymore

I bought my Oscar that I have had for 3+ years from Wal Mart, haven't had a problem with it.

Starting a thread to tell people not to buy fish from Walmart is like starting a thread to tell people not to spill hot coffee on their lap. LOL

:iagree:

I've actually seen alot of fish that looked to be in better condition than some of the LFS. Not saying it was a normal day, but still. I have also seen LFS that looked like crap.
