I bought my Oscar that I have had for 3+ years from Wal Mart, haven't had a problem with it.

OK....Still I say the MAJORITY avoids buying fish from there at all costs. I get salt from there and dechlor. I have bought a couple parrots, and a couple Oscars in the past...

I think most people who buy fish from Walmart are newbies... I did buy a fish or two... some reason they always died a few days or less later... I do not do it now...

If you read on here seeing that you are new to the site, you will see 8 billion threads like this... your thoughts are in the right place...

Uh...I was no where near a newbie when I bought my oscar from Walmart. My only option at the time was that or a really crappy LPS. Walmart looked really good compared to this pet store.

i've bought good fish from wal-mart and some not so good
i have a bp,oscar,3 angelfish,2 bettas,and a mollie from there
it all depends on the wal-mart
the department manager at mine is very knowledgable on fish we've talked fish for a hour before
he knows his stuff
so do a few of the employees
my friend used to work there and she knew her stuff
but it's a flip of a coin some good fish some bad
some stupid people some smart

the problem is not that the employees are uneducated on fish keeping its that they dont give a flying rats a** about there job. and walmart should educate there staff. i mean even a 5 year old can keep the fish they sell there

umm i buy cichlids there do i need to stop? i still have a convict from them that 4 years old.

The problem is that Walmart sells the fish as a comodity. The sell them like they are a bag of chips and thus take care of them as such. Yes you will always find an exception to the rule when it comes to walmart, but EVERY walmart I have been in and looked at the fish section has been the same as has been stated earlier, dead fish feasted upon by the remaining occupants, disease like crazy.
If you find a good Walmart to buy your fish, more power to you, but buyer beware, if that "good" employee leaves or is canned... well you know what is going to happen.

When I worked at Wal Mart, I wanted to work in the Pets but I didn't want to deal with the dog and cat stuff. But I worked in electronics and usually the Pets department associates came to me when a customer had a fish question.

:screwy:its not so much that its walmart, i think its just the people that are hired to take care of the fish.....because you can add onto the list any of the other chains, petco, petclub et all!....yes i have seen some healthy fish there, but oh boy have i ever seen some bad tanks, bad water...ect ect ect....
if you see bad tanks or dead fish......eh..guess what? dont buy!...

not to mention seeing ~mixed africans~.....if your looking for good stock...dont buy from any one who is selling a tank thats titled mixed africans!...doh!
