my older guy has recently been following me around every time i enter my room. It's taken him almost 3 months now to get as friendly as he/she is. I imagine it will take my new two as much time or close to it. He's very inquisitive and will poke his head out and just watch me.. tilt his head to follow me even. He hand feeds, and I spend alot of time just watching him and interacting with my hand in the tank, though I try not to touch him much as I don't want to harm him. but he always comes right up and is nosing around my hand. Even if I have no food he stays until I take my hand out. They may also simply be intimidated by the size of the Aro. Once my guy got eating earthworms after refuseing ot eat the first week. hand feeding came along very easy. patience, and stillness. Once he learned my hand wasn't gonna eat him he thought he'd try and it eat! Now i can't do anything in that tank without being followed.
I also have dim lights when i even bother to turn them on otherwise they get a small amount of indirect sunlight. dawn and dusk seem to be thier peak sassyness time. I get done at 6am from work so they are usually cruising around when I get home. this is also when I feed them, and soemtimes I also feed them when I head to work about 9pm. bedroom dimmer switches rock!
also small note, watch out for any sharpe rock edges, looks liek all smooth stone. as they get larger your honestly better off replaceing the rocks with either pvc pipes (cheap) or driftwood (can be pricey, but very natural looking) at 12" my guy tosses an 18" chunk of solid wood around fairly well. and moves his 24" 3" pvc pipe to suit his fancy. it's an effort a this time, but not much of one on this part. The rocks can fall and do some major damage to them once they get big enough to move them. also make sure the piles are stacked from the base of your aquarium up, not just sitting atop your gravel, where digging can topple them. gosh I'm rambley this morning.
