When I had my two Os in the sae tank the smaller one was always missing scales and they both often had split fins here and there, but nothing quite that bad.

This is why we say there are no strict rules. Fish have personalities and are subject to changing their behavior patterns.
mine does that too, have this 5 juvie Oscars all of them were best of friends, but one morning just find one of em beaten so badly you couldn't recognize if thats an O. now all of em are pairing up no fights or what ever. but who knows

i had a large oscar years ago , and it recognised me as its feeder and always came to the front glass to greet me when i sat in the armchair next to the tank , my brother visited me one day and i was in the kitchen making tea ,, my brother sat in the armchair and the oscar got very upset that it was not me and jumped out of the tank and slapped him in the face , , i managed to put him back in the tank , and later in the week my brother made me a door label saying ''beware of the oscar'' lol
my two Oscars from the same spawn seemed to be a pair; with advent of "puberty" the smaller one has now taken over, and is quicker onto the earthworms; they tolerate a group of corydoras, especially now that they've learned about the barbs and spines they have. one pictus cat and so far they are getting along. !currently moving from a 55 to a 160. I found the addtion of lots of driftwood really lowered the aggression level! you never know until you change the environment!
