I know, I am a newbie but please.

1. What use does a air pump have?

2. Same question only with a sump. Found big nice one in attic heard about it so wat does it do?

welcome.
1 - air pumps are for breaking the surface tension of the water to allow the gas exchange. ie CO2 out and O2 in. a power filter with a spray bar does the same thing if the spray bar is angled at an upwards angle to break the waters surface. its generally not needed unless your moving the fish and need battery powered pumps or for fry tanks for running the sponge filter.

2 - a sump is a large wet/dry filter that generally has a much larger bio media capacity than canister filters. do a search from the top right of the forums for more info. there is an abundance of info availible.
