don't keep big tanks with wooden stands in the basement

No basement here but I wouldn't THINK of building a wooden stand without a serious amount of sealing. I have stands that could sit in a pool for months and be fine after bieng wipped off. I guess it all comes down to how it was constructed in the first place.

I usually allow several thick coats of thompsons water seal to soak into the entire stand and then use three coats of spar varnish...sanding (steel wool) in between coats for a smooth finish.

most of ours are on wooden stands but we dont flood, cause of being on a slight hill as well, and we have had plenty chances to flood!...
eh...sorry bout yours....eek!
