ok this may be a really dumb question but i will ask anyways. My Tilapia totally destroys everything, but he has started to actually break apart the plastic plants into smaller pieces. i keep them in because i think he likes a little cover sometimes, but he attacks them frequently. any chance he could swallow a smaller piece off a plastic plant? should i leave them in or take them out? thanks in advance!

I've never had a fish eat any plastic pants but I check them every time I vac and make sure not small parts can come off and they are still mostly intact maybe move to rocks if you want to give him some cover

I would think that your fish would spit it out before it swallows it but I would take them out just to be sure

If he is actually breaking bits off of the plants, I would take the plants out. To provide cover, I would then go to driftwood, or stones arranged to make a cave. Cinder blocks work for this, too, and larger diameter pvc pipes if you cannot get driftwood or stones easily/cheaply. Best of luck.

first off this fish came straight from hell i think he totally smashed everything in the tank. Im afraid to try to stack any kinds of rock because i know he will knock them over and i dont want him to crack the tank. also he is about 11" so it would need to be quite a structure for him to have cover. thanks for the input everyone!

My male does the same thing, you can build a cave using flagstone and silicone it together so he can't knock it down. Also put a piece of floating driftwood in the tank to provide cover. Enjoy.

I've heard of cichlids that died from choking on gravel, so yeah i would think he could choke on plastic plants.

Buttikoferi = super jerks. Pretty fish but yeah.
