I should try that. I've been trying to catch my female Haplochromis (Xystichromis) phytophagus for a few weeks now to put in an isolated breeding tank. Elusive little b**** lol.
My bala's sleep at a 45 degree angle, its kinda cool, if you sneak into the room at night after lights have been out for a few hours I can catch them sleeping. They float stationary in the middle of the tank, all grouped together at a 45 angle.
Side note how I catch fish in big tank. I use a big net that's wider then the tank, like you get for fishing. Then I do a water change, so now the water is lower then the net, and net is wider then the tank.

I walk around and turn on the room lights a few minutes before turning on fish lights as mine usually sleep that way and I've spooked them a few times.
My guppies hide amongst their java moss and in the catfish hideouts. It always looks like most have gone missing for the first few minutes and suddenly they all come out and start swimming. Still worries me occasionally with them sleeping in the raphael cat holes
Most of my other fish are bottom dwellers so I don't notice it so much. My flame dwarf gourami is pretty obvious in the brackish. Black sand, dark green java lance, bright orange fish.. He's only ever on the bottom when the lights are off, usually tilted at an odd angle.

sometimes i spook my rbps and they dart all over the fricken place... bumping into anything that comes into thier paths at full speed... which is alot of force seeing as they are all over 8 inches...
