Don't think Cichlid are social fish.

I bought 5 Clown loaches to live with a 14 inch RTG and a Cichlid parrot, I have changed my tank over the last week to try and house Loaches. The parrot Cichlid was the first fish I ever bought; it cost me about a Dollar and grew big.
I was worried the RTG would see the loaches as food, the day before yesterday 1 loach died, I was looking for scars because I thought it had been bitten but there were none. Yesterday another 3 suffered the same way.
last night I checked my water because I know Loaches are sensitive, Ammonia 0%, nitrite <0.3%, P.H 8. My water is supper clean because I keep an Arowana, it cycles about 9 times an hour. The temperature I don’t know because I live in the tropics and never bother with heaters, although the water did feel cooler than normal due to current low pressure and rain.

While checking the water I found the problem, it isn't my Arowana, he has a look but leaves the loaches. The problem is a big parrot Cichlid, I saw it corner a loach and ram it over and over. It died soon after.
When my Arowana was young I used to worry the Cichlid would kill it through ramming it, I should have guessed what was going to happen to the loaches.
Further more the Cichlid has always stopped me training my Aro to eat pellets because it’s greedy and eats everything. A few people may disagree with what I did and how I did it, but the Cichlid met its end last night after the fourth loach was killed. I did it as quickly as possible, I also had no qualms over doing it, and the loss of one killing unsociable fish to preserve the life of others is cool with my Karma.
I now have 1 clown loach and I’m going to buy more to try again.
I HATE buying fish for them to die because of something I may have influenced, or didn’t thin about. Any Cichlid of any type should be on its own IMHO.

clown loaches are alot like cardinal tetras ect.. they like low PH/KH water. and need to be carefully adjusted to different water conditions. I don't doubt the cichlid adding to the problem, But i wouldn't 100% blame him for the deaths. I'de see what PH/KH your getting the fish from.

I have 4 clown loaches in a pond with 8 large cichlids, they are all still alive.

They came from JJ market in Bangkok, if you saw how fish were stocked for selling you'd be shocked.
I bought them from a well over stocked tank, I put the in an iso tank to make sure they had no problems. The iso tank is the same water as my main tank.
When i was sure they were well i bagged them and put them in the main tank to adjust to the temperature. For 2 days they were all fine. I will try and lower the P.H but usually its at 7, the substrate change probably raised it to 8, i'm pretty sure the P.H will now be at 7 / 7.5.
The parrot was nothing but trouble regardless of the Loaches. It constantly fought with my Arowana, I had a smaller parrot and it killed that also.

How big’s the pond?
My tank is 60in x 30in x 26in high, I think it's about territory. It had to go.

cichlids go with cichlids

^ i'll agree with that, I was a little angry with it at the time of writing. Maybe mine just had a really bad attitude. It may have been a cross breed because it had the body shape and forehead like a flowerhorn, but not as bulbus obviously. It wasn't as orange as other parrot cichlids eather.
It grew really quickly aswell, the smaller parrot cichlid it killed from bullying was older but about 1/4 of the size.

Dude that stinks.. :nilly:

Hope the next batch fair better! I also have seen clowns freak out at oddly timed light on/off periods. I've had some faint/shock/fall over dead if you will from abruptly turning their lights on at night. deffinately one of those fish once they acclimate good luck killing them but getting them past the first few weeks can be a killer. maybe try more hidieng spots for them as well until they settle in?

Glad to hear your killer was humanely dropped though. :D

and yeah, I've seen pictures I'de never throw any of those straight into my main tank :WHOA:

The additional 5 Clowns i added to the one left alive are all in fine form. My arow does want to eat the i think, it patrols near the several hiding places. It also haws a look at them when they swim in a group against the current in the evenings, but as a group they move so quick and look big i think it's put off.
All 6 eat 2 times a day, sometimes i can only see 5 and i start too think one is gone, but then it'll appear. Where it's hiding i have no idea!!
