If the filter makes a flushing sound it means there is still air trapped inside of it.

flushing? mine only does that for a few secs when i turn it back on
is your tank completely full with water?
 
I told you to get that gnome spray. Now they're building toilets in your filter. You'll probably need to call the exterminator now.
