Well To Start this was around a year ago when i had already been keeping fish for a numerous amount of years prior to this. I had trusted my girl to set up a fish tank equipment (heater) so it could Be ready to put my fish in using a preused pump/filter which was already in the fishes first tank, she had set up the filter correctly, even decorated the tank perfectly, but when she had put the heater in she had turned it to the wrong degrees so after the fish was already inside the tank she had changed the heater up ( Considering it doesnt have a temperature gauge on it, I returned home 5 hours later to find all my fish had been boiled alive, the plastic suctioncup holder had been completely melted and the water was practically bubbling.. Moral of the story - DONT TRUST OTHER PEOPLE INCLUDING YOUR GIRL TO MESS WITH YOUR AQUARIUMS!.. Do it yourself, do it properly. I was extremely gutted at how my fish had come to their sad demise, My fish was replaced afterwards but its not the point..

I've learned that some things you have to do yourself, my wife is not a hobbyists like myself. Also we are human and make mistakes. Btw welcome aboard.

I know we are human and we all make mistakes, my girlfriend isnt a hobbyiest too like ourselfs she didnt understand how losing fish can be a painful procedure for many hobbyist especially when a fishes death isnt common in my factor, if a fish does die unnaturally it concerns me for the wellbeing of the rest of my fish, but since geting my new Jaguar she has become increasingly more interested in fishkeeping but she only likes large cichlids etc, fish with personality, she didnt believe me when i told her fish can have personalities but its true, they do! :)
And thanks for welcoming me :)

Hello; Welcome to the forum. There have been a few times I have lost fish due to errors made by others or myself. Such outcomes from mistakes are unplesant but will happen. One truth from over 50 years of keeping is that all the fish I have ever kept, with the exception those I currently have, are dead. Those I have now will die if I live a while longer. Losing fish is as much a part of the hobby as water changes and feeding. Some live a long while and others die fairly soon.

You are lucky to have a girl who is willing to help and take an interest in your hobby. Many will not. Even if mistakes are made, she is trying to help and be a part of our life. I hope you can help her to not feel bad about what happened. We all make such errors, at least I have.

Good luck

thank you for welcoming me :)

And Very true, fish do die and it can be upsetting and also i didnt think about that she was trying to take part in my hobby because as you said yourself many will not as fish arent 'interesting' to them, i guess i am lucky to have her actually have a intrest in what i like, as for water changes i believe they are a very very important underrated part of fish keeping, i truthfully enjoy doing water changes as it gives me a real excuse to spend time with my fishes, i have 7 tanks and i could spend a good 5-6 hours changing water and repairing all the damages my fish like to cause to my plants ect haha.

Happy fish keeping:)

Dump her, and tell her she's fat! LOL

Welcome to MFK, Cory!

I've learned from reading all these stories on forums and some personal experiences that aid from non-fishkeepers should be a last resort. And if you're going to use them, be extremely precise in your instructions, and really make it a point that they need to follow your instructions to a tee. When I go away on vacation I just let my fish fast during this period. The only exception is if its more than a week, I only have 1 fishkeeper friend that I ask to feed my large CA, just so they don't get too aggressive due to hunger.

I set up my tank just fine and I'm a girl...LOL

And when my FH died, I cried for months :( He had the BEST personality...and wow...I thought I was the only one that actually liked doing WC :)

You know what you are doing though, I didn't just aim it at girls been terrible at setting tanks up haha :P
Im wanting a FH but cant seem to ever find one anywhere which isn't asking stupid amounts of money for juveniles, And water changes aren't a chore, if you think doing WCs is a chore then it will feel like one, its all about perspective :)
