dorado with payara?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Jesus Christ!!! It's so expensive!!!! Here I can pay something like...5-10 U$ for a 6-8 inches S. brasiliensis!

I really can't understand why a dorado is so expensive i U.S. I can understand why an aimara is expensive because all are collected but there are many fish farms raising dourados here.

There's where to start. Seems people aren't familiar with the different species. IF you think Brassies are farm raised you might have them confused with Frankies.

My understanding is the Frankies are now farm raised and are by far the cheapest. These can be obtained up here for under $60 for little guys. True Brassys are so rare up here there's thought to be less then half a dozen imported. They sold for almost $400. My understanding is this species is under restrictions for export and have very low quota numbers. Most go to continents willing to pay much more for fish then the US is. Very rare to see in the hobby here.

And yes, shipping IS expensive. Bag up a 6-8" Dorado to ship from Brazil to the US. Now take the fish out. I bet you'd really say "Jesus Christ" after learning what it costs to ship a bag of water. Much of the price we pay for fish up here is due to the ever rising shipping costs.

The $150-200 range is what we used to pay for Frankies before they were farm raised and still wild caught.

Unfortunately many speculate the quality of the farm raised fish is much less then that of a true WC specimen, so demand for the farmed is going down and demand for true WC is going up, and the prices are reflecting this.

Its all relative my friend. I can go down to the local fish farm and get some bass, gar or catfish for less than a dollar each. In places like Singapore where these fish aren't native, and aren't commonly imported, they command insane prices. You are experiencing the same phenomenon in reverse.
