Dormitator masculatus or Dormitator latifrons?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
did not know if that was the goby in question. it wasnt indicated. more pix with better images of distinguishing features would be even better but im voting maculatus.

Sorry, I'll try to get my daughter to take some more pics.

how long have you had the fish? how big is it? growth rate could be key in figuring this out.

I purchased him on January 25th so 40 days ago and he appears to have grown a little over an inch so that's indicative of D. maculatus 1"/month early growth so I may be getting a 150 gallon tank. Perhaps the telltale black stripe isn't a species specific trait. The LFS owner was telling me there's a lot of hybridizing in captive bred fish so maybe that's the case and who knows how big he'll get.

Just got a new digital camera and had a heck of a time getting a well focused picture but this one came out pretty good. The spot array and gill stripes are more indicative of D. latrifrons than D. masculatus. He ("he" because the forward dorsal fin is shorter than the aft one and he has a yellow belly). I love his behavior so even if he was the greater monster he'd be getting a forever home in a much larger tank though it might have to go in the basement because I'm not sure my plywood floors in this townhouse would manage the weight.
