Hello fish people,
I unfortunately have become suspicious that my jack dempsey may have gill flukes.... And since I have him in a tank with my juvenile true festae, I'm thinking that this one should be treated as well...Currently they are both in a 60 gallon tank, that was jump started a few days ago. Nitrates around 5 ppm, nitrites 0, ammonia 0, pH is 7.8 ugh!! too high I know...but this is not a new condition to the fish, my jack dempsey has (unfortunately) had to be in this pH since I got him years ago, my tap water here comes out at a pH of 8.
The jack stopped eating pellets and flakes a long time ago like months ago...so not knowing any better I continued feeding what he would eat...earthworms, some meal worms, and some frozen foods like blood worms and mysis shrimp. In an effort to get him more space and alleviate the strange behavior I was seeing, I bought this 60 gallon and moved them in. Within the last few days though, the JD has stopped eating everything even the live and frozen food items, and does a head "shutter" when presented with food. Approaching 1 full week without eating now. Haven't noticed any poop at all so I don't think it's white or stringy but not 100% certain as the fish has not been eating or pooping lately. So this is why I have landed on gill flukes...I can't see any red gills or puffy gills, the fish does a fair amount of banging it's head on ornaments and the gravel though...Not continuous but noticeably abnormal and also sits at the bottom of the tank nearly 100% if the day. The fish's appearance is 100% normal from what I can tell. So I figured since I had prazipro why not dose it and see if my JD feels better? Here's the treatment schedule I found:
Here is the dosing schedule for PraziPro

Praziquantel
Diseases: flukes, tapeworms, intestinal flagellates
Contraindications:
It is not effective against camallanus worms however it has been used numerous times successfully for fluke infestations and flagellates.

Dosage courtesy of Thegab.org:
Day 1 -- remove carbon, perform water change with vacuuming, and add Prazi to tank
Day 2 -- add Prazi
Day 3 -- do nothing
Day 4 -- do nothing
Day 5 -- do nothing
Day 6 -- add Prazi
Day 7 -- add Prazi
Day 8 -- normal partial water change with vacuuming
Day 14 - normal partial water change, then add prazi
Day 21 - normal partial water change, then add prazi
Day 28 - normal partial water change, then add prazi
Day 35 - normal partial water change, add carbon, treatment is complete

Recommended dosage: 2.5mg per liter.

Here's my big question, on the Prazipro bottle it says not to dose more than 1 every 3 days, but this schedule clearly does in the first 2 days of treatment. Which should I follow?

One more thought...If I have been using the same vacuum hose in multiple tanks...should I be concerned of cross contamination of flukes in my other tanks!?

Ive used prazi pro and did exactly what it said on the bottle, and havent had a problem since. And still have alot left. I also added aquarium salt and bumped temps up. But your symptoms are not the same as mine were. My symptoms were contstant flashing, and clamped fins, loss of apetite

hmmm...okay. Well maybe I'll stick to what it says on the bottle and go from there. I'm just at my wits end with this fish, he's been displayed frequent (but not constant) shaking and rubbing (sometimes violently) against ornaments. He's clearly in discomfort, but am I certain of gill flukes? Absolutely not, but not sure what else his symptoms really align with. What I do know is that this loss of appetite is abnormal. Even after it quit taking flakes and pellets, it still very willingly ate live and frozen foods. (not including feeder fish, i do not feed these)

I figure Prazi Pro is the safest med I have to treat with...Definitely don't want to jump to coppersafe or paragaurd yet...
One thing I'm definitely getting tired of is the "wait and see game". He's just not getting better, and I can't find any water conditions that would be impacting him in such a dramatic way.

This has turned into a real mess. I did about a 50 % percent water change in the tank and vacuumed and then dosed prazi. Now when I'm testing my water levels it's saying that my ammonia level has jumped to .25 ppm! I tested the darn thing yesterday and it read 0...I swear it did although I feel like I"m losing my mind now. The nitrates and nitrites show 0...so now i'm thinking I must have thrown my tank into some sort of mini-cycle? Ugh...I'll be surprised if I don't kill both these fish..
So I dosed the tank with SeaChem prime which supposedly makes ammonia safe? But I'm unsure of what to do now. Do I stick with the prazi schedule listed above? or do I start daily water changes like I would normally if I had a messed up cycle in a tank? Any and all tips are super appreciated, thanks!

I did the jump start last saturday so today is day 7. I've been doing the seachem stability treatment for new tanks in addition to doing the jump start. On day two the nitrates read 5 ppm, 0 nitrites and 0 ammonia...but obviously today that changed. I'll do another round of testing tomorrow.\
I'm worried I threw the tank into a mini cycle by having to remove the carbon filtration... I have a marineland filter on this tank and those dumb cartridges have active carbon. So maybe the wheels didn't have enough bacteria in order to compensate for the removal of the cartridges...Luckily I have bags of media used in my other tanks that I can spare...I took one bag from two of my other established tanks and they have been in this 60 gallon tank all day. Hopefully that boost of bacteria will speed things along..

update...just as I'm sitting here tonight, I'm watching my JD lose his mind..Very violent scratching and head banging. He's not scraping his sides, he's targeting his head and gills only. Would the Prazi Pro treatment somehow cause this behavior? It's the worst I've seen him display in a while..Haven't tried feeding the tank yet, but this behavior certainly has my poor red terror freaked out...

I don't remember you saying you use a water conditioner, do you? And just for the record I don't believe your pH is negatively affecting your fish. ~8.0 is just about right for a JD. They're extremely hardy as well and I'm going to guess yours is captive bred, all these factors make pH less of a deterring factor.
