If you are bulding with just 2x4s and screws, you are talking about $20 in materials.

I went to Home Depot during my lunch at work and saw 2x4's for 1.95 or something. Cheap!! They were 8 feet long too maybe even 10 footers. And the L brackets were near there were 50 cents. Was going to buy a few, but didn't think they would fit in a Mustang.:(

Home Depot will pre-cut it for you cheap. I think mine was like $0.50 / cut. That is the way to go. Just go with the sizes listed in that link if you decide to use it. He lists how many of each cut to get.

I brought mine home in my wifes Lexus and she never even knew.

Word of warning if you go with Home Depot's cuts, they don't make precision cuts. Their cuts are only supposed to be within 1/8" either direction meaning you could build a stand where one leg is 1/8" long and the leg on the other side is 1/8" short. That's a 1/4" slope from one end to the other. Their plexi is the same way- one time I bought a piece there & had it cut, and I had to show the guy how to use the cutter! He didn't know anything about it, and they had him do it for me. A lot of the employees are great about it, but I've also seen employees who didn't even know how to use the saw making cuts for people, and the cuts were HORRIBLE. So, you may be better off doing it this way and just asking them to make all of your cuts 1" long or so, and then straightening them up at home, or a friend's house. It's a waste of wood, and will probably cost you a couple dollars extra (can't get two 49" pieces out of an 8' board), but if you're nit-picky like me, you may want to anyway.

Just as a reference if you do pursue building your own stand. I recommend buying 10' 2x4s in lieu of the standard 8'. With the 10' board, you will get two 48" cuts out of them, where you can only get one from an 8' board. You save money in the long run.

That's a good point, Pharoah. If you're building a large stand, that's definitely the way to go. If you're building a stand up to 48", though, an 8' would be fine. An 8' board cut in half will be a fraction of an inch short (depending on saw kerf, or blade thickness), but if you build it so that the long pieces go inside the end pieces (like. . . erm . . |=|), you'll still have the thickness of the 2x4s on the end to add on to those 48" sections.

But figure out all of the lengths of wood you'll need before you buy lumber, and figure out how they're going to come out of a piece of wood. It's super easy to think about how large of pieces you need, then realise you were calculating getting 100" out of a 96" board once you start cutting. And DIY stands are cheap, but gas for running back & forth is not!

I believe that he is talking about the metal shelving you buy and just put a pice of wood across. That is another way of having a double stand, but DIY is so much more fun and personally rewarding. LOL
