Ive decided to take the Dovi Plunge and get one !!! I do have a few questions though to the experienced owners. I am purchasing a young one maybe 1.5 inch so of course I will not know its sex. I also want to invest in another large tank as in I have the space. This dovi will be housed In the new tank after it is fully cycled and will temp be in a 135 gallon until that point. My question to the more experienced . Would a sump system or a canister be more efficient ? Im more than likely picking up a 180 or 220 whichever pops up. It's an extra 100 dollars for a drilled tank. Is it worth it ? And what size of sump ?

I'm a canister fan myself. Sumps do provide the best in bio, but not great mechanical. I run FX5's on big tanks, no issues with any. As for your new Dovii, EXCELLENT! I've had mine a month now, got at 3ins, might be pushing 4 now. I have him in a 55, will up to a 125 in another month. Perhaps you should grow yours a bit to confirm sex. A female would be ok in a 135 for several years I think. The dif between a 180 and 220 is only height, and imo would be to small for a male once he gets up near the 18in mark. Once my male gets up to big fish size it will be 8ft tank time

Thank you for the input suprd71. I was going to get a much larger tank regardless if it was male or female. I have been planning to get a shiny new tank for some time now but I did not have the space ! I myself like the fx5's but wanted ones input on it since dovi are quite larger compared to the stock I currently have and couldn't find any threads about filtration for larger fish.

Congrats on the decision to Dovii.....wonderful fish. Canister filter should be fine , weekly 30% water changes will help better regardless of the stock.

I agree on the canisters I use fx6 on my heavily stocked 150 it works fine with weekly water changes of about 40% , I too have got a small dovii few months back I'm pretty sure mines a female , growing nicely in my grow out tank I'd say at least 1.5" in the few months its been with me

Canister filters are great but the sump is the way to go! There are so many benefits to a sump, hide heaters and all equipment, you can move much more water just by adding a larger pump or slow it down with a ball valve. I don't agree at all that they don't have as good bio filtration. These kinds of filters are made for bio filtration. Along with bio balls u can add a fluidized sand bed or some K1 kaldness. There is just so many different options with sump that you can't get from a canister. If you look at any large aquarium 240 + 9 times out of 10 they are using some kind of sump and it is able to keep these large tanks pristine. I use a sump on all 7 of my tanks including my 125 that I house and breed my matting pair of dovii in. They are happy ( well as happy as dovii can be lol) and have had a total of 3 fry since I got them just several months ago.
Hope this helps.

Canisters work well. Sumps work well and expand the system volume, gives you a place to hide heaters, etc, and can serve as a qt or ISO tank from time to time. And maintenance is a breeze for a sock/sumpsetup.

I prefer sumps but they both will do the job. I've seen a few Dovii setups filtered with nothing but sponge filters.

interesting. I do like the idea of hiding heaters and such . Looks like I have much more researching to do.

Well I went over to my favorite LFS and picked up a 1 inch dovi . ITS so cute !! I put it in a smaller tank for now by itself until it gets to the 3 inch point . Im happy to report it started eating like a pig last night. Also the LFS here has convinced me to purchase a nice glass euro braced tank and they would throw in a fx6 $200 cheaper so that is a plus. I guess I better start a DIY stand thread. I figured it would be cheaper to build my own stand rather than spend 700 on a prebuilt one. I am very excited ! Now I have to convince my husband I need a leather recliner for the basement so I can watch my fish lol !
