Dovii and?????

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You can try getting a population of trumpet snails or similar in there, otherwise most algae eaters will be targets. Magnet is definitely the most reliable option.
Honestly I would never get snails, they populate a lot really quickly and make a high bio load as well as they are major parasite transmitter, there are (nerite?) snails that only reproduce in salt water, I will most likely never get snails but you do what you prefer ( not specifically talking about trumpets)
Magnet is I agree best option as well as a uv filter

Thank you all for the input.

He will be in a large tank, we have the magnetic cleaner. We have a UV setup, I'll ask my SO about getting it re-set up. We were discussing Cory Catfish or Bristlenose plecos being in with Dexter, bit were worried that he would attack them. We were thinking of having some wood to hide under for a pleco or a Cory, to see if that would work. Not big on the snail idea, too quick to reproduce and if one dies, then too much bio load in the water. Hard to find them when they do die. Not what we're looking for.

I appreciate all of your suggestions, I thank you for your time!

Since he has been alone, and claimed the entire space as his own turf, (for 3 months already), being a very territorial species, I don't believe he will allow any other fish to exist in the same tank with him ever, unless the tank is at a minimum, 300 gallons. And as a full grown adult, even a 300 gal is quite small to expect any other fish to be allowed to survive, except maybe a properly vetted female.

It won't take too long for the Dovii to outgrow and prey on the bristlenose with proper husbandry. Nerite snails will also become crunchy snacks, "pest" snails will be picked off occasionally but without overfeeding they wont have a population explosion so could work if you keep an eye on them and are happy to have them in the aquarium. Cories would be dangerous as choking on them is a real concern for the Parachromis and while they will help pick up uneaten scraps they aren't going to make much if any dent in the algae. Honestly as others have said a quick wipe of the aquarium walls during each water change is best, if you are performing say two a week you wont really allow much algae to get a foothold. Just make sure to wipe each pane you want to remain clear even if it is currently.

I would never pay money for nerites or mystery snails - they barely do their job and die quickly. Small trumpet, ramshorn, or pond/bladder snails all have a minimal bioload. Most fish will like them as snacks and the population won’t explode unless there is nothing to eat them and they are overfed. They generally won’t carry parasites unless you are pulling them from the wild.

Dovii is a solo fish. It will destroy all fish in a tank less the 400g. 400 plus you may be able to have some other fish but no guarantees
