Dovii Breeding Attempt..

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
mine are together and never divide them or separate. if they go into breeding mode the male will nudge her side and do like a shaking / posing posture. this is his way of saying are you in the mod lol.

well next week i'll take some out a grow them on and see if we can't get you a pure blood girl.

How do you like having the tank on the floor?

yes mate.

i wasn't sure at first and every one advised against it. but when the sun hits the tank in the morning and it's all lit naturally its amazing the colour that comes of the male.

i use internal filters which are not an issue with this set up. currently 3x 1200 lpr running each with 4 baskets and never had any issues. i do a 50%+ WC weekly using a pump.

very easy just seem natural to look down at it.

Anyway sorry for the hijack........

A female would be great, just name a price lol.. The male was flaring his fins and shaking beside her but she was too freaked out and kept swimming away from him. Could the chasing and biting be down to her not being ready to breed yet?

i think so mate, if the female aint interested then the male will become frustrated.

i'll grow some out for you and we can talk lol im happy for you to just cover postage mate

OK I need a bit of help. Any time she goes through the divider he chases her into corners and tries to bite her as if it were another male fish.. she's definitely female and she's bred with a male jaguar in the past, any tips here? Is he just too big compared to her? Is there anything I can try to get them both in the mood?

Just keep the tank divided. I've seen plenty fish spawn through dividers.

The jaguar seems to be scared of him, showing no interest in him at all.. I've looked for a while for someone that can ship dovii to me and had no luck so far.

Found a guy who can get me one at 6" from cichlids of americas but he says it'll be £50-60 ($70 - $85) and £20 ($30) shipping.. Seems really expensive considering I only paid £30 ($40) for my 14" male..

Ok, dovii are not your typical Cichlid.. And breeding them takes patients. First divide 100% for at least a couple weeks maybe more. Give the female more room, couple places to hide or breed. Give the male one place to kick it but keep center of tank empty except for maybe some flat rocks up against the divider. You'll want room to observe them responding to each other through the divider.

Once you decide to pull the divider, there will be more aggression between them than usual pairing. They take and give more damage than the average Cichlid. Once they pair, you are 80% they will bond and be good undivided for a long time.. Months/years. But you'll also notice that females will end up being the aggressor from then on. So most people will divide them again once they see lip locking and fighting. But know this, the female will not accept the male unless he proves worthy. If he is loosing and constantly retreating then Yes divide them. Only time to divide with dovii usually is when one consistently runs and doesn't protect itself against the other. Now since they're so tough with the pairing ritual. I tend to break up the pairing attempts into several tries. Allowing visits undivided starting at 20-30 min and extending each time. This gives them time to build respect for each other without killing one.
