Dovii Breeding/Sexing

I think your biggest thing to overcome is her size. I'm sure all will fall into place once she matures. My male would tear through just about anything if he wanted, hiding spots, dividers and so on. I think the key is having a large tank so she can escape and he losses interest. For the most part it seemed the male would get after her from time to time for whatever his reasons, if he could get her or close to it he would not give up. If I get another female it will be when I set up his large tank and get caves that are to heavy for him to flip and only she can get in. The divider is okay but they often hurt themselves on them. Also building hiding spots with smaller rocks and driftwood only holds them back for so long. I would say it is a female but she has a little ways to go before she is ready to spawn. I'm sure my male could have ate his girl if he wanted, if their interested in spawning than that wont be the case. He will be shy of the divider for a little while, then he will jump it, swim under it or knock it down over time if those are possible with that style. Good luck.

Ya the size difference worries me. Ill have to find a way to secure it from everyway possible. My dad thinks its fine but I don't think he understands the real power and persistance of this fish. Thanks a lot for the advice

It really depends on each individual male Dovii. I've never had any issues with my male and his mates as of yet. His first girlfriend actually picked on him on occasion and was quite a bit smaller than him. I recently introduced a new female an they just spawned a week ago. He's around 17" now and she's 5" and are guarding their new batch of fry. Good luck with getting them to pair and spawn.

So I woke up this morning and saw the divider was out of place. There was a space in the corner As u can see. The female was on the males side and blue wasn't doing a thing to my suprise. But as soon as she went to the other side I fixed up the divider since ill be in class all day

That's wats makin me think mines a male is that it has a bit of blue on its dorsal as well but hey might turn out to be a nice female or an average male

blue has nothing to do with gender, I can show you a female that has more blue then most males! Your safest bet is the divder on a 45 degree angle, from the front corner to the back piece of glass! Positioning it this way will make it impossible for him to knock it over, place suction cups on the top and heavy rocks at the bottom. Had my female this way for 2 years and she never got hurt, on the openings you cut out make sure you file down the cut pices and your good to go. IMO this is the most Safest way to house a pair of dovii any other way you are taking a risk!
