----Hey I just wanted to move this thread I started from the breeding to the hybrid section. I'm dying to know whether these to fish will ever produce fry, so please feel free to even throw out a guess if you please.----

Hey I have a few questions if anybody could help me out. I only have two fish in my 220, a female dovii and a male dempsey, and they seem to have paired off and have made several unsuccessful attempts at breeding. The male is about 5 years old and is a full grown 11 in. while the female is about 5-6 in. and about a year old. The male will shake a bit and they will lip lock and bump each other for a while and sure enough within a day or so my driftwood will be covered in eggs. I have noticed the female seems to be taking her job more seriously recently, taking some serious nips out of the males fins and fanning the eggs relentlessly, even skipping eating. Usually after a few days all of the eggs turn color, then turn white and im back to cleaning the tank out. All of these attempts have me wondering if they have any chance of being successful at producing fry. I know the female is new to this so I have just been figuring that it may take her a while to mature for the process to go well, but I have always been curious if these two types of fish can actually breed. I would love to set up my 55 as a grow out and see what a cross of these two would turn into, but I may be getting my hopes up for nothing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

----Another thing is Ive recently added 40 guppies to the tank in hopes that they may breed too. (Extra food never hurt.) I used to have a pair of cons in there that would breed but they were a little pushy after the fry started swimming. I was hoping that the guppies would be a little more mild mannered. Anyone think they may be able to pull it off despite the danger of my cichlids? Thanks.----

I'd say give her a couple more shots. Although they just might not be..I forgot the word, but it's when the species are not linked closely enough and the eggs just won't hatch...

The guppy idea might work with a good amount of cover, such as floating anacharis.

Thank you GSman. I'm going to throw a few pictures up. They seem to be getting ready for another try today. Im waiting for the egg drop.

Did they lay eggs again?
As for the guppies, eventually they will all be gone imo.
I made the mistake of buying platties once and they went from 4 to over 20 in no time including some i found that survived to full grown in my xp3 cannister filter. I decided to get an Oscar to erradicate the problem since nothing else was working (the birth of my CA/SA obsession). The platties were gone in less than a month.

Not yet Chris but the male is shaking around a lot. They are getting punchy but not as much as I thought yesterday. I figure they will give it another go in the next few days. I thought the guppies would get wrecked in the first five minutes they were in the tank but they are actually surprising me. They stay at the top of the tank a full 6ft. away from the cichlids at all times hiding around a heater and an intake. It's okay if they end up becoming a meal though, I figured the parents could either spend some quality time killing them or it could be fun for the potential offspring to chase. Whether they reproduce in their time in the tank is in the Lords hands now. If they do sustain a population it would be pretty cool but i'm not sweating it too much. I'm just getting amped up for the big guys next batch now, maybe this will be the one. Whatever happens, I have to say its pretty exciting watching over this. Thanks for responding, i'll post shots of the process if it starts. By the way, Habs fan? If so congratulations, I thought you guys blew it trading Halak last year but it looks like the faith in Price worked out. Also, chrisplosion, my bad, that's two strikes for this thread. Feel free to move it if you can, or a mod, or anyone. Im not very savvy with this site, as you can see.

that has got to be one the most beautiful doviis.

Thanks, That Pet Place in Lancaster is where I got her. They have the best quality fish imaginable. You can order off of their website if your too far to visit, and I believe they have them in stock, I was just up there a week or so ago. Nice people.

Also, as of last night all of the guppies are dead. Brutally eaten in anger by the terrible two. Still no eggs but with the increased aggression and amount of holes they are digging I can't imagine it will be much longer.

It did take a while. As of last night though, eggs. I just hope the male did his part. Im glad at least they used the slate I put in. If anyone has any tips they could share with me that could help me make this process go smooth, I would be very grateful. Heres some phone shots of the eggs.
