Dovii/Dempsey Hybrid

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
There may be bad news this morning anyway guys, so I may have another three weeks to figure everything out. The eggs are gone as of today but I am curious about one thing. Last night I saw the two of them at points, but most especially the male, digging more and deeper pits around the tank. Is it possible that they were taking the good eggs left and storing them in the pits they have been digging? Maybe that's what the male has been trying to do and the female just hasn't got the hang of it yet. I planned on doing a water change tomorrow but I figure I'll wait now just to see if that's a possibility. I definitely read somewhere that dempseys move fry around but Im unsure if they move eggs. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks again for the help guys.

Well it sounds like they haven't quite got into the swing of things , here is a layout of the week long process , female lays the eggs ,male hits them with the secret juice, the eggs look white still and ones that don't get it will be bright white, day 2 start to notice a black spot in the center of the eggs this is the the eye pupil, after this point the parents have been fanning the eggs , really at this point they no longer need the parents if you think they have been killing the last batches, but with good parents by day 3 they will both move what looks like eggs into the pits they dug, these guys are called wigglers, they might move them over the next few days as much as 3 times or maybe more, hybrids are different of course. within 6 to 9 days they will become free swimmers,, FYI you get the 3rd day wigglers you can remove the parents, I personally have removed eggs that were just showing pupils and hatched them just make sure you match all tank perimeters they came from, Hope this was helpful...

Very helpful, thanks. I'll be using that info for reference in exactly three weeks when we go for round 5. Playoffs are starting anyways, it would be a tough time for me to keep up with fry. That's my positive spin for this one. It would be nice to celebrate a Flyers cup with some new hybrid fry though, so maybe the next one would be better.

this sounds like my midas/xiloaensis pair.... they laid eggs and on the third day i came home to find nothing and i was looking for them untill i found them in a corner.... they could have moved them...

I ended up cleaning the tank today and found a bunch of fuzzy white eggs floating around under a log. Looks like they hid them. I knew something was wrong last night when a few eggs were still there and they were both digging the pits away from them. That female usually never leaves the eggs, pretty diligent. They have been changing it up a lot during the whole process so I guess they are learning each others ins and outs. Nothing good ever comes easy.

Had another dud batch this week. Coincidentally the same day the Fly guys got bounced by the Bruins. 3 more weeks.

The bruins killed them in that series. I don't think they're getting passed yzermans lightning though. Keep trying with the fish sounds like you'll have cool fry one day.

Combination of the Bruins playing well and the Flyers out of gas. And questionable goaltending changes throughout the playoffs. Start Bob.

Alright today I added the two green sunfish I caught a couple weeks ago to the tank. They are small enough that they can't hurt the two lovebirds but big enough not to get eaten. Should work out well, these little guys are fairly tough. They are already relegated to the far outskirts of the tank by the Dovii/Dempsey, hopefully pushing these two around makes my male feel more like the man. Time will tell, I'm expecting a new batch of eggs this coming week. It's may 21st for my own record.
