i really would like to put him in a 120 gallon but with something else

to be perfectly frank with you, a dovii is gonna get huge... a 120 is not gonna work with a full grown or even a semi full grown male dovii.
there are plenty of threads discussing things like 'what tank size can i get away with for a male dovii' etc. etc.
i think the consensus for most sensible fish keepers is that big fish like dovii need their own tanks, even more so because they are aggressive.
feel free to disagree with me

:iagree:

i also agree a 240 down the road but for now 6 to 8 months i was going to use a 120 i have. ive read about tank size and all i was just seeing what other info i could get

You will find few examples of dovii being kept with other tankmates in aquariums under 500 gallons. It is the price you pay for owning a dovii.

Dovii are just mean. Spizz and I tried with one that we both had and at 6-7 inches he killed a mean 11 inch GT. We learned the hard way that unless the tank is massive, they are solo or breeder only fish. I do however disagree that you NEED a 240. Bigger is always better, but I have seen big beautiful full grown male dovii kept solo happily in tanks with a 6 X 2 footprint (180-210).

Having raised a male up to 18" + I would say 180 gallons bare minimum for a male and 240 gallons for a male/female pair.
You can definitely use the 120 gallon for a while though. As far as tankmates go - good luck. The only fish my male ever tolerated was a female dovii and a large pleco. But they both needed hiding places or they would have been dead too.
