My dovii is over 18" now, and I rarely feed him live foods. You are probably going to have to let yours fast awhile to get him off the feeders, but I do believe it will be the best way to go.
My guy loves shrimp, I buy it when it is on sale, keep it frozen and thaw it before I feed it. As far as dry foods, he loves large krill (freezedried), and I have also supplemented his diet with cichlid large cichlid pellets. Whatever I have on hand from any of the major brands. Another fun food I have found are the Can O' shrimp from Zoo Med, as well as some of there other can foods that are cooked in the can. And then the stand bys that are around the house, such as crickets, earth worms etc.
I also think that feeding these types of foods lessen their aggression, I don't have to worry about sticking my hand in the tank, or worry about him flying out if I lift up the lid!!
I hope you are enjoying yours as much as I enjoy mine!! I think the are one of the most awesome cichlids out there!!!
Cichlid Power!
