Young juvenile dovii hide alot there little more then feeder fish. Adults are out in the open but there's still alot of fish that can eat a full grown male dovii, (bull sharks, tarpon to name a few ) so they still require some cover.

heres a video which is well viewed of a massive male dovii.

There isnt any decor yet he seems fine and not shy.

Id much prefer to keep it minimal, if the fish isnt too stressed in that environment. Just to help out with the water quality.

Or do you think the fish is really stressed in such an environment?

Dovii change as they age, when young they need places to hide. Floating vegetation, logs and such are where they hang out.
When they are large, and become the apex predator they do not need as much cover to maintain security. A 2ft dovii, will not be able to be swallowed by any but the largest of birds, but a 5" one is a snack for almost any fishing bird, from a young cormorant to a kingfisher.

This is the tank layout at the moment.
Its only a 4x2x2 for the next couple of months).
I thought I should maximise his swimming space.. but he doesnt really swim.

When i had a biotope set up for him, all he did was hide under the driftwood 24/7.
I had read on here removing the decor forces him to become more active and out in the open. I have seen bits of that, but not the the extent I was hoping for..
