dovii information

I just bought a female dovii about 5-6" long for $20. I was trying to find out some info about them. I have looked on the web and found some decent amount but was looking for things i should know about them. I was wondering size tank for a single female dovii would be? I have her in a 40g for now and was wondering how long i could keep her in it until i can move to get a bigger tank. I dont think our house can support another big tank. I know the males are headbangers with a lot of attitude and would a female be the same or no cause i think its cool when they are like that? What would be the best diet for her? I just got her yesterday and she is really scared when you walk in the room and is there anything i could do to relax her and make her not so scared of us? Any other information would be helpful.

Never had a big female but I've heard that they're every bit as aggressive as males. 40 gallons will be okay only until she reaches 8" or so, MAX. At that time I think you would want to get a 6' tank. In a small tank I doubt you'll see the glass banging behavior that you're talking about either.

Ya I want to get another big tank but I don't think my floor can tank it. We already have floor post in the basement supporting my 125 and 100. She hides now from us but hopefully that will end soon she has alot of blue at this age. Before I took her I guess she was breeding with a jag. Is there anything I can feed her to make her a headbanger? What's a good diet? Would a 6 foot 100-125g work for her for life?

There is nothing you can feed to make any fish a headbanger. Its the over all personality of the fish. But if you keep her in a tank by herself for a long time try to put another fish in there and see what happens. Feed her some Pellets,krill, market shrimp. Females are just as aggressive as the males. Sometimes even more aggressive. Just try to get her a nice male.

The females can get pretty nasty. A 100+ gallon would be plenty big for her.
I fed mine pellets, raw shrimp, and nightcrawlers.

Ok. She had really good color now and when I saw her in the tank before she was beating up full sized blood parrots, oscars, jacks and severums if they came into her territory behind the driftwood and she was less than half their size. I like her a lot I just have to wait till she gets more comfortable. How big of a tank would a pair need? What size tank would I need to mix her with other fish.

A 5 foot long tank is good for a single female, so basically 100gallon tank. Females get nowhere near as big as a male Dovii, but can be aggressive towards other fishes, especially other females.

Dovii are not usually glass bangers like midas or umbee are. She might hide when you come in the room and yet still be extremely aggresive to other fish. Add some dithers and see if you can dim the lights on the tank.
