Yes, they break off during courtship and fighting. They do grow back in time it's not uncommon.

If you feed flake and pellets all the time their fangs get soft and break off. I noticed IME when you feed live food on a regular basis, the fangs develop faster and become stronger.

Just like any predator........they get soft if they dont get to kill their food as they do in the wild.

If you feed them live foods the "fangs" will develop faster and become stroger. The drawback is that they will damage each other when they fight.

I like my predators to be in top condition like they would be in the wild.

I feed Bio-Gold+, earthworms, Jumbo meal worms, chopped shrimp, Krill & once in a while beef heart. I stay away from feeders. The RTMs do some damage to each others faces during courtship, that's when I'll notice the occasional tooth missing. My Jag & Trimac are by themselfs in their own tanks and have a nice/nasty set of teeth. It is an interesting observation, I can't say I noticed it, however the earthworms are alive and the Krill has a tough shell so maybe that's the differance.

It may only be anecdotal evidence, but I've noticed the very same thing.

let me specify.......I never feed my Jags store bought feeders. I feed 1" convicts that magically appear in 2 of my tanks.

What I mean by live is natural foods like earthworms, tadpoles, baby frogs, crickets, beetles, ants and most anything they could eat live in the wild, I also put in "sacrificial plants" for them to destroy. This method of feeding...... steps up growth rates off the charts. They display their fitness and predatory instincts when fed this way.

DISCLAIMER>>>>>LOL: When feeding live foods and plants be sure and quarantine the swimmers and aquatic plants, and do your research on the insects and frogs you are collecting to feed your fish.

Once you have done your research and discovered what your fish eat in the wild. You can find native live foods that are similar enough to substitute. JUST BE CAREFUL!!!
