Dovii pair added to the pond

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have never kept Dovii before so this was all new to me. Apparently they are pretty easy to breed. They have already spawned and have fertile eggs. I’ve added 5 more 3-4” Dovii and think this will be enough to establish a population of them. I plan to donate fry to my LFS since they don’t sell them to spread the fish to any other local interested keepers.

You placed them in your pond Mar 15 at about 6 inches of size and they already spawned by Mar 24?

Any updates?

Yes they spawned that fast and several times since. I have yet to spot any juvenile dovii but the water level dropping during the lack of rain may have prevented them from finding suitable shelter and habitat.

Here are some fry from a spawn they had back in April/May. It was hard to get close since they were inside a pallet and she would flail sand everywhere if I bothered them too much. The male Dovii left her many times to try to spawn with the other females but he would come and check on her.
The smaller dovii are around 8” now and the original pair the male is well over 12” I don’t want to over estimate but he is probably larger tthat. I’ll try to get an updated video or still of him.
I am hoping they become the apex predator especially when the Mayans seem to be out producing them with obnoxiously large and successful spawns.

I have a female Dovii with a head deformity. She looks like she has a huge nuchal hump.
