so how long do you guys think i could house my dovii pair(6-7") in a 120g 4x2x2 realistically? without freaking out about tank size, i already have a 180 that i will clear out for them when the time comes, and then build something bigger for life.

Probably will have to do more with how well they get along together then actual size of the fish. Have heard dovii pairs need alot of space, no experience myself though.

I keep mine in a 120 and my male is 15inches and female about 9inches and they are fine together and have fry right now.

:WHOA:Thatt's messed up. :(

I'd be inclined to allow them the extra space to grow right away.

That's not that bad in my opinion.
4x2x2 tank, with a 15'' and 9'' fish.

I wouldn't put a 15 inch fish and 9 inch fish in a tank that size, even if it did work. Even worse if he has it divided because the small tank causes aggression.

Agreed, I'm usually a bit of an overstock policeman, and while that stocking certainly isn't viable long term, a 15" fish in a 4x2x2 is fine, plenty of people keep multiple Vieja/Paratheraps specimens in 125's without a problem.

Bloody hell.

If you're expecting them to continue growing in that tank, fair enough, but there's hardly anything wrong with keeping a fish that maxes out at 15-17" fish in a 4x2x2. I wouldn't do it personally, I'd consider it a bare minimum situation, but it's still doable.

honestly, if they get along in there i think that they would be ok until the male is around 14-15" the female will be about 10" then i expect, then put them in the 180 until they wanna kill each other, then get the new tank 240G +

By the time the male has had enough of her in the 120g, the 180g won't make any difference. Therefore another beneficial factor to giving them the 180g now, would be to allow them extra time to strengthen their bond.
