Definitly holds the Crown!! No trouble capturing his Color this time!! Good job with him!

Thanks everyone! Yea still in the 180. I would have to look but I think he is on 3 years now, raised from a fry. I thought I got his color pretty good this time.

Very nice NWatson. That boy is really turning out to be a MAN! How is his temperament? I'm fortunate that my guy is still tame and hasn't lost his marbles. Although having a glass banging monster would be cool, I hate it when they hurt themselves banging on everything.

He's a nut. I would rather he was calm. He has never hurt himself banging the lids or side of the tank.....besides lossing teeth if that counts. Thanks.

I'm thinking most of the crazy personality tends to come out once introduced to a female and especially after spawning. My big guy still hasn't come out of his shell yet, so I'm considering finding one for him:)

Yea who knows. My guy flips if I am wearing red to the point I will take it off if I go near the tank. I think they calm down in large tanks, not sure of the size but it seems like the ones kept in huge systems are pretty calm. I think they feel good in the monster systems having enough territory to claim. Was your guy from a pond? He may not feel confident enough yet to act like a nut, hey your guy may be a calm one. I would like if mine chilled a little. I have to stay clear of his tank if I want to watch him in a calm state. Any closer than 8 feet or so his flaring up, staring me down and snapping the glass. Then when I walk away he starts slamming the lids. I saw the pic of your guy in another thread, color is looking good. Hang onto him for a long time and I'm sure he will look even better.

I think tank size has something to do with it as well as breeding/spawning, but I don't think there is any one thing that is concrete when it comes to aggression. I grew my guy out in a 300g for the first 2 years of his life and then moved him into a 180 after I broke up the original pair about 6-8 months ago. On the other hand his daddy who has lived in a 600g his entire life still remains a glass banger! I would say that each fish just seems to have their own personality which is the coolest part of this hobby. Keep up the great work guys/gals and hang onto those monster dovii. They only get better with time.

I hear ya, I was talking about public aquarium size, not home aquarium sizes. I have never seen a nut Dovii in a 5,000 gallon tank, I have seen more than a few calm ones in those monster tanks. My Dovii did not calm down one bit know that he is alone, I guess since he can't beat on a female he takes it out on me every chance he gets. I do agree that it will vary with each fish, although teh majority of Dovii are nasty.

This man knows what he is talking about. I agree with this statement 100%. I have had Cichlids from the known aggressive species be push overs and others live up to there names. I believe each fish is a individual and should be treated as such.
