Dovii still shy at 13 inches....

Normal or start firing up the grill ?
Lol, supposed to be quite tasty. What's the housing situation, and is he shy always or just sometimes?

Is it in a bare tank, or almost completely bare, or does it have cover to allow it to feel comfortable? Rock caves? Driftwood? Does the back and sides have dark cover or open and vulnerable?
not easy to make a fish that can reach over 10lbs comfortable in captivity.......If could imagine his mind, he's looking for a meal 50% his body-weight so he doesn't have to hunt for another week. Makes defending his territory a lot easier

I hope you'll be walking through my 1st Dovii....i'm sure it will be fun for you to watch me turn a 265g , 7' tank into merely "his next grow-out"

He goes out for food when he is hungry and to chase the bala sharks when i am not nearby, but any sudden movements and he darts back into his cave.

Housing

Sand
250g 80x26x28
2 caves that he can fit into
3 bala sharks 7-8 inches
3-4 plecs

Back glass is painted glass, left side is clear, right side is 80% painted black.

Sounds like you've got good cover, maybe its just not as alpha as some. But remember a 13" cichlid in nature is not immune to predation by many things here in Central America, caiman, snakes, and other reptiles, dozens of bird species, otters and man.
Being a "intelligent" fish means hiding, not by being careless or obvious, these are the kind of successful survival traits that have kept it from going extinct.

One of the ones I'm growing out is about 10cm, and is the biggest of his 4 other siblings (and bossiest) and he's also with 5 Bala sharks (3-4 inch), which is now 4 as he just bit ones face off. Savage little bastard aye. If you really want a mean one it's probably best to grow out a few and you'll definitely have a vicious one - provided you have the right/optimal conditions - who will most likely murder his siblings
